Where Hollyhock House sits
Hollyhock House stands atop Olive Hill within Barnsdall Art Park at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs says on-site parking is available at the house.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the house for Aline Barnsdall, an oil heiress and theatre producer. Built between 1919 and 1921, it was named for her favorite flower: Wright worked stylized hollyhock motifs into its ornamental art stone, textiles, furniture and art glass.
In 1927, Barnsdall gave the house and the surrounding twelve acres to the City of Los Angeles as a memorial to her father, Theodore. Hollyhock House is the only Wright residence in Los Angeles open to the public. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 7, 2019, as part of “The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.”

What can you see at Hollyhock House?

A visit brings Wright’s design into focus through the house’s hollyhock-inspired details and restored public rooms. The City says those rooms underwent extensive restoration in 2012 and reopened to visitors in 2015.
The experience extends beyond the interior: tours provide access to restored outdoor spaces as well, reflecting Wright’s idea of the house as a “garden house.” If you cannot access the building in person, the City offers a Virtual Accessibility Experience on site and remotely through a web browser.
How can you pair the house with Barnsdall Art Park?

Allow time for the park setting as well as the house: Hollyhock House forms part of a wider campus in Barnsdall Art Park.
Residence A, completed by Wright in 1921 as a guest house, is the first visible element of the campus when you enter the park. A Sunday guided tour includes the surrounding gardens, while self-guided visits also give access to the house’s outdoor spaces.
For a broader look at the grounds and their connection to the house, the Barnsdall Art Park visit guide covers the park and Hollyhock House together.
